WINTERGREEN OIL - THE DANGERS

Wintergreen oil has come under scrutiny for decades now, if you've never heard of it, it's because it is seldom used and for very good reasons.

Wintergreen is one of the few essential oils whose sale is closely monitored by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

With so many unqualified people now creating their own remedies and selling them to the general public, I am actually disturbed to see some of them using Wintergreen in “Pain Relief Potions.” It’s obvious they were never educated about the contraindications of this powerful oil.

As a Professional Holistic Therapist it horrifies me.

WHY THE DANGER?

WINTERGREEN HAS A NATURAL CHEMICAL CONSTITUENT CALLED METHYL SALICYLATE

A CAUTION FROM A LEADER IN AROMATHERAPY

“Methyl salicylate must be absolutely avoided by anyone taking blood-thinning drugs, as it increases the action of the drug, and this causes blood to leak into tissues and internal bruising occurs.”

Robert Tisserand

This includes taking something as simple as Aspirin. The results are potentially fatal.

I certainly never practised with it on my Diploma course, run by the International Institute of Health and Holistic Studies, but we were taught the dangers and vowed never to use it.

Although Robert Tisserand states that Wintergreen has some wonderful properties and can be used in a 5% dilution but for me it is simply not worth the risk when there are other safe oils that do the same thing.

The risk is especially great when it is sold in an oil blend for Pain Relief because the consumer may not be aware of the real dangers and contraindications when just buying it off the shelf and may even share it with someone who is equally unaware.

Seriously how many times have you bought a natural body product and thought that there was any real danger to using it?

Birch Oil is another oil to be avoided for the same reasons.

THE FINAL WORD

Please avoid anything with Wintergreen oil to be on the safe side and be cautious of buying from unqualified people who list it as an ingredient in any of their products because it shows their level of incompetence and ignorance.
