#5 LEARN FROM THE EXPERTS

Some people want to start their own business but don’t factor in a budget for training. Don’t consider training as an expense but as a long-term valuable investment in your business.

You need to be knowledgeable about your industry if you want to be taken seriously by your customers.

Melanie Jane, at The Scent Academy, an online perfume training platform.

You can read all the free blog posts you want, and you can go on all the forums, and you can read every book about perfumery. But that would take you an exceedingly long time.

Time spent on reading conflicting information or receiving bad advice is time you could have spent on quality training, building your brand and making money!

There are several reputable schools, including mine at The Scent Academy where you can learn either online or in a classroom setting.

Expect to pay from €500 to €2500+ for a short course and around €30,000+ for 2 years of formal training. Check the curriculums to ensure you’ll get out what you need for your business and your craft.

My CPD accredited Perfume course at €650 isn’t cheap (things of value rarely are), but it's over 325 hours of training and self-learning. Which works out to €5 an hour.

Consider when you want to start earning money. Are you willing to wait a few years by doing it for free or do you want to make money as soon as possible?

If it’s the latter, then get the right training and learn how to do it properly from the start.

'If you're serious about your business being successful, then you'll be willing to invest in the things that matter.'

You'll end up selling products, superior to competitors who haven't had the right training and that will be one of your USPs. It's an investment that you shouldn’t skimp on.

You don’t even have to make the products yourself to take part in training.

If you outsource production, like some of my students, you’ll have the upper hand on your competition because you’ll be knowledgeable about your brand and its products, and that gives you credibility.

If you don’t intend to make the ‘jus’ yourself, you still need to understand your industry, even if you just learn the basics in a Fragrance 101 course.
